Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is native and localised throughout the UK and adults can be 1-1.3m in length and weigh up to 9kg. Their territories are usually about 10 miles of river where males and females may overlap. Other habitats include lakes, ponds, canals and streams and in Scotland the coast.
Their diet is mostly fish (80% of their diet) and also frogs. As it is able to see just as well underwater as it can above the water, it can prey on water birds, such as moorhens and ducks.
All year round it spends its time playing and hunting along riverbanks, being perfectly adapted to a semi-aquatic life.
Did you know...? The otter is the only semi-aquatic species of the mustelid family! Although they are great swimmers otters can’t hold their breath for more than 30 secs at a time.
